BYU MOA

Sarah,
You need to go check out the latest exhibition at the MOA.  It is called 'Wide Open Spaces' and they have some cool looking western landscapes.  Check it out and let me know how it was.
I am leaving to go on a trip up to Connecticut tomorrow morning.  I'll be back home on Friday.  I'll try and take some pictures of those famous northeast fall leaves.
Love,
Dad

It's That Time of Year Again!

Time for the orange food coloring to come out!  The month is filled with orange pancakes, crepes, tortillas, and our favorite "Pumpkin Roll-Ups". Close relative to the Pizza Roll-up, the pumpkins take on a unique shape and color, but still have that great ham and cheese flavor.  Ishel took 15 of these to school today for the yearbook staff! They are the size of a baseball, and so delicious!

Highlights of October

highlights of October!

Book review with Grandma. Out topic was Richard Paul Evans books. Each in the group read a book and shared. Fun night.

General Conference weekend. Great time with the Hutchinson's for Saturday lunch. YUMMY Bro. Hutchinson's chicken soup and Tortilla towers.

Ishel volunteered at the Opera. and babysat that day.

Miranda and Dylan celebrated birthdays!  JJ b-day was the next day! He enjoyed a trip to play Lazer Tag with his buddies. Mimi, Emily, Susan and I attend the fish fry.

Tuesday, Oct. 12--Cheerleader Team Dinner at the Brimhalls.  We made Chimichungas with 20 cheer girls.  They each got to do a part, and some were surprised that THEY were the ones doing the cooking.  A great time by all.

Thursday--lunch with the missionaries--bacon wrapped chicken and crashed potatoes.  Last time, both Elder White and Elder Cutler are transfered. Elder White has been in our ward for 8 months.

Friday, Oct 15--JJ and Von camp out and attend the 100 years of scouting Jamboree. Mimi and I had VIP tickets (thanks honey!) We did meet a man who became an astronaut at the age of 56! He said "never give up on your dreams!" I told him of how I gave up my dream of becoming an astronaut when I discovered I was allergic to Tang--the official drink of the astronauts. We then sat on the 2nd row and had a great time in the chilly night air.  We sat next to Fran who was the woman in charge of all the musical acts for the last 2 days of the entire Jamboree.  She was pretty amazing and pretty cold until we shared a quilt with her! Mimi and I waited and got Sinbad's autograph on our "Jingle All the Way" VHS cover. It made him smile. It was a funny show.

Tuesday, Oct. 19--JJ has been working for Brother Krum just mowing lawns and working on his workshop.

Wednesday, Oct. 20--Mimi, JJ, and Ishel all went to the Orthodontist. Tinsel teeth, here we come!

Wednesday, We went shopping and found 3 pairs of jeans for JJ--that are all long enough! Hooray.

Thursday, Oct. 21--Mimi swam laps at the Bayside Rec. Center pool, Kempsville's is out of commission til next year.

Thursday, Adam Nielsen, CES director, came and visited our seminary class at 6 a.m.  We had a good time and I was able to share my 20/20 vision talk with him. He loved it.

Thurs--Talked to Sarah. Doing well and having sooo much fun at school, she never wants to come home! I'm glad, it's how it should be. She may want to come home, sometime...?

Fri., Oct 22-Dad works at home and helps get Ishel's REflection contest movie off the computer and onto  a disk! We rush it to school after YMV. I walk the halls with Ishel finding the teacher to give it to... I meet lots of people from yearbook, teachers that adore Ishel, and counedt 7 posters on the walls all designed by Ishel. It was a fun afternoon for a Mom to hear so many good things about her daughter!
Then, at 7 is the homecoming football game. Ishel cheered the whole game and was super cute as the captain calling cheers to all of JV, varsity and Alumni cheerleaders.  VERY fun, and cold! At half time they had the homecoming court and floats drive by... Ishel was with the yearbook staff. Super cute and when the announcer saw their poster, he said... "WOW! Check out that banner. It is fabulous, it really shines!  What a great banner. (Ishel of course had designed and painted it!) We were all so proud! We all came home for hot cocoa, Mark and Sarah Harding joined us.

Sat. Oct. 23, Ishel is up at the crack of dawn to go take the ACT test. She was done by noon and had just a minute to rest before she led the Bi-Stake Activity that she had helped plan.  She and Connor Smith announced all the games and helped everyone have a great time. JJ commented that it was a "super-cool" activity. Mimi, Ashley Udy and Jess Ankney all came over for pizza and games. I put my dancing shoes on and met my sweetie on the dance floor as we chaperoned the dance. Party!

Sun. The usual, Dad up early for Ward conference at Cape Henry ward, then meetings all day and back to the Sandbridge building for Bryce Carbee's Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Whew! We are wiped out, and this week looks just as busy! I get to tell stories this weekend at the Library and Emily's party.

We just heard word that Kail, the man who sat next to Pres.Oaks on the plane from Paris, is getting baptized. He will be here this week for a visit.

I love the craziness that is around the house.  Kids are busy and happy. We are all passionately following our dreams. (Dad's dream is to paint all day--so he is not doing that, quite yet!)

Homecoming Banner

Hi Sarah!! Check me out! I made the Yearbook Homecoming sign and we WON!!!! BEST BANNER!! 3 years in a row!!!!:) (I've made the banner the past three years)  love you!!

Swim Team

I'm on the Swim Team!!!!!!!!!! It was soooooo exhausting, my legs were like broken by the time I was finished. I had to swim 50 free style, 50 back stroke, 25 breast stroke & half butterfly.
Mom & I met an astronaut Roger Couch, and saw Sindbad in Concert. We had VIP tickets, thats how we met Mr. Couch & Sindbad. I got this sweeeeeeet video, the music was heart beating so loud!

Sarah, we started our new family blog!

OK, so we started our new family blog.  Each member of the family will update it once a week so that you all can keep up with what is happening in our exciting and fast-paced lives.  I will start off by telling you what I have been up to.  I've been reading this great book called Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt.  You can get an PDF copy for free at http://www.fee.org/pdf/books/Economics_in_one_lesson.pdf .  It is kind of long and boring if you don't like Economics like I do.  Anyway, it starts off with one of my favorite stories called The Broken Window Fallacy by  Frédéric Bastiat from his treaties What is seen and what is not seen.  You can short 3:30 minute video here http://freedomkeys.com/window.htm .  It shows why government stimulus spending is so wasteful.  Check it out, it really helps to you to understand and identify this economic fallacy.
JJ and I just got back from a neat overnight camp out at Scout Fest 100.  It is the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.  We went to all kinds of booths like tomahawk throwing, RC race cars, and JJ had a huge Boa constrictor placed on his shoulders.  Saturday night we got to attend a country/rock concert and then had Sinbad give us some stand up comedy.  He was very funny.  It was just as entertaining to hear Joseph's huge laugh.
In my calling at church I am in the process of creating the 2011 Virginia Beach Stake calendar and I will be speaking at Bryce Carbee's Eagle Court of Honor this Sunday.
At work I will be travelling to one of our Branches in Connecticut at the end of the month.  It should be fun.  The last trip I went on was with you up to Philadelphia.  We sure had a good time at the art museum.  Speaking of art and Philadelphia, the Barnes Collection is moving to a new museum right next to the Philadelphia Art Museum in late 2011.  http://www.barnesfoundation.org/parkway/#about  There are some amazing impressionist paintings in this collection.  There are some wonderful paintings by Monet, Renoir, Mattise, and of course my favorite, Cezanne.
I love you Sarah and hope our blog will help to keep you connected to us.
Love,
Dad
